Although some people like to watch the amusing antics of squirrels, most people do not like them because they keep stealing any food which was put out for the birds which they like to watch more. There is a way though that you can enjoy both and that is to provide both a bird feeder and a squirrel feeder. Although squirrels are smart and athletic and so can often find a way to reach a bird feeder and steal the food, they would much rather get their food in an easier manner and so if they have their own feeder, they would leave the birds’ one alone. If however, you would rather not feed the squirrels at all then you can get anti-squirrel bird feeders.
There are several different anti-squirrel bird feeders available today but perhaps the most popular ones are the swirling bird feeders. These are bird feeders that have a perch which spins when weight is placed on it. Although most birds do not weigh enough to cause the perch to start spinning, the weight of a squirrel will start the perch spinning and it will spin enough to make the squirrel fall off.
Although these swirling bird feeders will stop the squirrels from getting to the main supply of bird feed, it may not deter them from your garden as, when the perch spins, some seed drops to the ground and the squirrel can then feed on that. Instead of using squirrel proof bird feeders though, you can place a baffle on the pole which has the bird feeder at the top. A baffle, in this case, is a dome shaped contraption that fits around the pole or tree holding the bird feeder and prevents the squirrel from climbing over it to get to the feeder. If you are going to use one of these though, you must ensure that the pole holding the bird feeder is far away from any trees, buildings or anything else which the squirrel can climb as otherwise, the squirrel will climb the tree and then jump across to the feeder.
Another type of bird feeder that prevents squirrels from stealing the food is one which is placed inside a wire mesh globe. The mesh of the globe is small enough to stop squirrels and larger birds getting to the feeder to eat but large enough to allow smaller birds to pass through. The mesh is also strong enough to stop a squirrel biting through it prior to getting bored and looking for food elsewhere. If you feed birds in the winter because you feel they will have a hard time finding food otherwise but don’t want to feed the squirrels as they are known to hoard food for the winter months, you may want to think again.
Although it is true that squirrels do hoard food supplies, they do not have very good memories and so often forget where their food supply is which means, they are often hungry as well during the winter months.
